چکیده

Prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in men. An estimated 161,360 new cases will be diagnosed in 2017 in the United States, accounting for 19% of male cancer diagnoses and 8% of cancer mortality in men.1 Localized prostate cancer management represents a challenge for clinicians as several definitive treatment options exist including surgical resection, external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) +/brachytherapy boost, high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT), and low dose rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT). Treatment recommendations and decisions are often based on patient age, comorbidities, risk stratification, as well as patient preference. LDR-BT is an attractive option for many patients, either as monotherapy or in combination with EBRT. Brachytherapy techniques have continued to evolve over the past several decades with new data supporting technical innovation and revised treatment indications. The purpose of this review is to summarize the role of LDR-BT in managing prostate cancer and to discuss patient selection in a contemporary context.

Brachytherapy for prostate cancer: follow-up and management of treatment failures.

The use of prostate brachytherapy for the treatment of early-stage, low-grade, low-volume carcinoma of the prostate continues to rise. Given the prolonged natural history of these early lesions, treatment failures may take many years or even a decade or more before becoming clinically evident. It is therefore likely that as the brachytherapy data mature, clinicians will be asked to help manage ...

Capacitive Hyperthermia as an Alternative to Brachytherapy in Treatment of Human Prostate Cancer Cell

Introduction: The aim of this study was the evaluation of induced DNA damages of human prostate cancer cells, DU-145, treated with a combination of radiofrequency capacitive hyperthermia (HT) and teletherapy (EBRT) compared to a combination of teletherapy with high dose rate brachytherapy (BR).   Materials and Methods: DU-145 cells were cultured as spheroids ...

Assessment of absorbed dose uncertainty of prostate due to source relocating in brachytherapy by monte carlo method

Brachytherapy, is a method to treat prostate cancer in which a radiation source is placed inside or next to the cancer affected tissues. Purpose of this article is to determine the uncertainty level of received dose in prostate tissue due to the relocation of the placed radiation sources and inflation in prostate after positioning the radiation seeds. To simulate the model 6711 Amersham (activi...

Evolving Paradigm of Radiotherapy for High-Risk Prostate Cancer: Current Consensus and Continuing Controversies

High-risk prostate cancer is an aggressive form of the disease with an increased risk of distant metastasis and subsequent mortality. Multiple randomized trials have established that the combination of radiation therapy and long-term androgen deprivation therapy improves overall survival compared to either treatment alone. Standard of care for men with high-risk prostate cancer in the modern se...
